Screaming Chambers

A sidewalk pavilion that seals a scream inside, then translates it into a kinetic façade — making a private act of catharsis visible in public.

The premise

Screaming is intrinsically private — it expresses intensity and vulnerability most people aren't comfortable sharing in public, even though the act is cathartic and necessary to release pent-up stress. In a city like New York it turns heads, and the privacy of home isn't always available either. Rather than endlessly bottling stress up, I asked: what if there were a designated space to unload it?

Giving a scream form

The project works through cymatics — the visual representation of wave phenomena — alongside the emotional power of material distortion. I ran Chladni figure experiments to watch sound push material into pattern, then traced the vectors of a single scream to get geometry I could build with.

From volume to chamber

The sound volume becomes the void. Each chamber is tuned to a different decibel range — the louder the scream, the more the interior surface lobes and folds. The set was 3D printed as a family: shell above, extracted sound volume below.

On the sidewalk

Sited on sidewalks throughout the city, the pavilion seals sound within a chamber built for one — but translates what happens inside into a kinetic façade, letting the public see an extremely private event without exposing the person or the sound itself.

AI image explorations

Made when Midjourney first came out, as a way to test how the chamber might read in the middle of the city — how a small, deaf, heavily textured mass sits against a street, and what it feels like once you're sealed inside it.

Program for its own time

Borrowing from John Hejduk's critique that the architect must create programs specific to their own time, Screaming Chambers offers a space to celebrate the beauty of a scream — a program the city doesn't have yet, but needs.
